Two men arrested for fatal shooting of man walking to work

Two men were charged Tuesday in the shooting death of 26-year-old Rickey Daniel Baker as he walked to the bus on the way to work last Thursday.

Maurice Jaquwan Miller, 18, and Shykiem Universal Smith, 18, were taken into custody Tuesday, one day after Richland County authorities released surveillance video footage of a gold 2005 or 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer. The occupants of the vehicle were believed to have information regarding the shooting, Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott said.

Baker was shot and killed in an armed robbery Thursday morning as he walked to the bus stop on the way to work, Lott said.

Richland County deputies were sent to the 1800 block of Longcreek Drive off Broad River Road at 6:45 a.m. July 2. Deputies found Baker lying in the roadway. He had sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the upper body and was unresponsive. Baker was pronounced dead after being transported to a local hospital.
