Employee found with gun at high school in Columbia, SC sheriff says
An employee at a high school in South Carolina was arrested Monday after she was found with a gun on campus, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.
Crystal Gamble, 36, was charged with carrying weapon on school property, the sheriff’s department said in a news release. She was found with the gun at Richland Northeast High School, according to the release.
The Richland 2 school is in a part of Columbia between Decker Boulevard and Interstate 77. Gamble is a secretary at the high school, according to its website.
At about 7:30 a.m., Richland Northeast’s school resource officers were alerted by a metal detector that there was a gun in Gamble’s bag, the sheriff’s department said. School resource officers immediately secured the weapon and detained Gamble, according to the release.
No injuries were reported.
The school resource officers confirmed that Gamble is the legal owner of the gun; which she said that she had forgotten was in her bag, the sheriff’s department said.
Gamble was taken to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, according to the release. Information about her bond was not available, but Gamble is not listed on the jail’s inmate roster.
If convicted on the felony charge, Gamble faces a maximum punishment of 5 years in prison and a $1,000 fine, according to South Carolina law.
There was no word if Gamble has been punished by either the school or Richland 2.
