When Paulie’s dad returned home from work on Easter Sunday 2012, his two-year-old son was alone in the house and dead. His live-in girlfriend, then 17-year-old Desiree Nicole Almgren, had packed all her things and fled.

The prosecution said an examination of private autopsy photos showed that the child had suffered severe traumatic brain injury from multiple blows to the head. Physical evidence in the home showed that the child had been thrown on the floor and against the bedroom wall, where the sheet rock was cracked.

The child could have survived these injuries, a doctor told the court, if he had been taken for medical attention instead of being left alone.

Almgren, now 20-year-old, was sentenced on Friday to 30 years in prison for voluntary manslaughter, Lexington County solicitor Donnie Myers said in a news release.
