Man charged in professor's death is grandson of former S.C. State president

ORANGEBURG, S.C. — A man has been charged with murder after police say he killed a former South Carolina State University professor.

Albert Clayton Smith, 28, of Orangeburg was arrested Saturday morning, Orangeburg County investigators said.

He was charged with killing Hattie Hunter, 77, of Orangeburg, who was found dead Friday evening in her home. Orangeburg County coroner Samuetta Marshall said Hunter died of multiple stab wounds.

Sheriff Larry Williams said Smith, who was the grandson of former S.C. State president Albert Smith and who friends say knew Hunter, was questioned soon after Hunter's body was discovered. He was arrested hours later.
