Mayor's ouster sought after 4th arrest

ATLANTIC BEACH - A state lawmaker has asked Gov. Mark Sanford to oust the mayor of a troubled coastal town.

Rep. Tracy Edge, R-Horry, wrote Sanford Friday that Atlantic Beach would be better off without Mayor Retha Pierce.

Pierce was charged Wednesday with drunken driving. She was released on bail the next day and told reporters she is innocent.

Pierce has been arrested three other times since late 2007. She was charged in April with leaving the scene of an accident and was arrested in January on a trespassing charge at Town Hall in a dispute with staff members.

As a council member, she was charged in 2007 with resisting arrest during a traffic stop. She said she had to go to the bathroom.
