South Carolina’s high school graduating classes of 2010 earned a record $900 million-plus in college scholarships.
It is the largest sum since the state Department of Education began tracking scholarship information nine years ago, said state Superintendent of Education Jim Rex on Monday.
The state agency estimates 90 percent of the scholarships are academic and 10 percent are athletic. Life, Hope and Palmetto Fellows scholarships, which are paid for by the state’s lottery, represent about a fifth of the total.
