State legislators signed off on establishing 14 new precincts for Richland County voters this week.
Next, the plan goes to the U.S. Justice Department, which should finalize the plan by fall.
As many as 40,000 voters in the northeast and northwest parts of the county will cast ballots in new locations, starting next year, said Mike Cinnamon, Richland County director of elections.
The additions are required because of growth in the northern part of the county, he said.
