In a sign that Andre Bauer is definitely running for governor, South Carolina’s two-term Republican lieutenant governor opened an Andre Bauer for Governor bank account Thursday.
"We deposited checks today and will immediately start the process of asking our previous donors to allow us to convert our deposits from the lieutenant governor account" to Bauer’s gubernatorial bid, a step required by law, Cathy Novinger, chairwoman of the Bauer for Governor Finance Committee, said in a statement.
The campaign will begin organizing immediately and has filed the necessary paperwork with the S.C. Ethics Commission, said Chris LaCivita, campaign consultant, adding a formal announcement is forthcoming.
In August, Bauer offered to forego a run for governor if embattled Gov. Mark Sanford resigned his post, having Bauer finish out the remainder of Sanford’s second term. Sanford refused and efforts to impeach Sanford have stalled.
Bauer faces four Republican challengers in the GOP’s June primary: U.S. Rep. Gresham Barrett of Westminster; state Sen. Larry Grooms of Berkeley County; state Rep. Nikki Haley of Lexington and state Attorney General Henry McMaster.
