President Donald Trump is wading into the 5th District special election with a robocall urging north-central South Carolina residents to vote for Republican Ralph Norman on June 20.
“I need you to get to the polls on Tuesday to vote Republican for Congress,” Trump says in a robocall set for release Monday afternoon. “The liberal Democrats think that they have a chance to steal the seat from you.
“They’re not going to steal the seat. You can’t let them do that. Don’t let the Democrats stop the progress we’re making fixing Obamacare and Obama’s mess.”
Trump, a New York Republican, refers to neither Norman nor his opponent, Sumter Democrat Archie Parnell, by name in the robocall, audio of which was obtained by The State newspaper.

But Norman’s campaign, which paid for the robocalls, mentions the Rock Hill Republican’s name before and after the president’s message.
Parnell’s campaign says it isn’t surprised. “Ralph Norman has consistently put President Trump ahead of the people of the 5th District even when his attack on BMW put thousands of our jobs at risk,” spokesman Michael Wukela said.
Here is the full text of Trump’s message in the robocall:
“Hello, this is President Donald Trump. Barack Obama’s eight years as president were a total disaster for our country. A terrible economy, out of control crime and illegal immigration, not to mention Obamacare.
“I’m busy fixing Obama’s disaster in Washington. Believe me, we’re getting the job done. But I need your help. There is a special election for Congress in South Carolina on June 20.
“I need you to get to the polls on Tuesday to vote Republican for Congress. The liberal Democrats think that they have a chance to steal the seat from you.
“They’re not going to steal the seat. You can’t let them do that. Don’t let the Democrats stop the progress we’re making fixing Obamacare and Obama’s mess.
“So don’t forget. I need you to get to the polls on June 20 to vote Republican for Congress. On Tuesday, I’m counting on you to help me make America great again. Thank you.”
