STATE HOUSE: First hearing planned on proposed SC Medicaid budget hike

The S.C. Senate Health and Human Services Committee will hold its first Medicaid budget hearing on Tuesday.

Lawmakers spent all of last session debating whether to expand Medicaid under the federal Affordable Care Act.

The Republican-controlled legislature decided not to do it, saying it would eventually cost the state too much money.

Despite that, Medicaid continues to expand.

Lawmakers gave the agency an additional $110 million in general fund money for the 2014 budget.

The agency is asking for an additional $165 million in the 2015 budget.
