• Members of the S.C. House of Representatives will make it clear Tuesdaywhether they are serious about reducing the power of their leaders.
• The Young Conservatives for the Freedom to Marry are in South Carolina this week -- yesterday in Greenville, today in Columbia, tomorrow in Charleston -- meeting with GOP "decision makers" to push for two changes to the Republican Party’s platform: removing “anti-gay, anti-marriage” language and adding more “unifying” language that recognizes marriage is good for everyone.
Tyler Deaton, the group's campaign manager, would not disclose who his team is meeting with, but said they are a mix of lawmakers and GOP leaders including people who will play a key role in the 2016 presidential primary.
Deaton says the national GOP's future depends on a GOP platform open to marriage equality -- it's about "growing the party and making sure the party has a broad-based appeal, particularly to younger voters," making room for Republicans who believe in marriage equality.
Having grown up in Alabama in a conservative, evangelical family, Deaton says he understands that South Carolina is "different terrain" than the other early presidential preference primaries he will visit on the campaign tour.
But he hopes the idea catches on.
"We think this is a win-win for the Republican Party. It's an opportunity to do the right thing and to do the politically smart thing."
