Bernie Sanders bringing upstart campaign to SC
U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders has finalized plans for his first visit to South Carolina since announcing his 2016 Democratic presidential bid.
The Vermont independent will travel to Columbia and Greenville next Friday and to Sumter and Charleston next Saturday, his campaign confirmed.
Sanders, a self-proclaimed democratic socialist known for his progressive stances, has drawn large crowds in other early-primary states, Iowa and New Hampshire. He spoke to crowds of more than 27,000 each in arenas in Los Angeles and Portland, Ore., this week.
Still, Sanders trails Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton in Iowa and nationally, although one poll shows him ahead of the former secretary of state, senator and first lady in New Hampshire.
In South Carolina, Sanders is fighting Vice President Joe Biden, who has not announced if he’s running, for second place, far behind Clinton.
Sanders could change that with his four-city swing next weekend.
He was scheduled to speak June 21 in Charleston, but he postponed that event after the shooting deaths of nine members of Emanuel AME Church four days earlier.
Three Republican 2016 hopefuls are visiting South Carolina next week.
Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush comes for a veterans and military town hall Monday in Columbia. Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal attends U.S. Sen. Tim Scott’s town hall Thursday in Spartanburg. Ohio Gov. John Kasich files Monday for the S.C. primary before heading to a security forum in Myrtle Beach.
