South Carolinian Christopher Gustavus Memminger, who served as secretary of treasury in the Confederate government, is the face on the Confederate $5 bill. Memminger had an unusual life story. He was born in Germany. His father died in combat a month after his birth. His mother immigrated to Charleston and died of yellow fever when her son was 4. Memminger spent the next few years in an orphanage and, eventually, was taken under the wing of future Gov. Thomas Bennett. Memminger started taking classes at South Carolina College at the age of 12. A lawyer and state legislator, he was credited with strengthening the Charleston public school system.
