First Union assault on Battery Wagner on Morris Island. Built in 1862 and stretching across the island, the earthworks is intended to keep Union forces from reaching Cummings Point, where they could pound Fort Sumter.
Attacking from Folly Island, Union forces take most of Morris on July 10 and assault Wagner’s 1,800 defenders on July 11 but are driven off.
