A toddler was struck and killed in a hit-and-run Monday night in the Lowcountry.
Jayden Thiel, 3, whose family lives in the area between Reevesville and St. George, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Dorchester County Coroner Paul Brouthers.
The accident happened on U.S. 78 near the intersection with New Meadows Run, said Lance Cpl. David Jones of the S.C. Highway Patrol.
The make and model of the vehicle that hit the boy is unknown, Jones said.
ABC News 4 reported that the boy was on the roadway when he was hit. The television station said a witness heard a neighbor screaming, “That’s my baby!”
Information about why the boy was on the road was not released.
The Highway Patrol’s accident reconstruction team is investigating.
