Three-year-old Ezekiel Marcengill died Sunday one day after his twin brother, Caleb, drowned in a backyard pool in northern Anderson County.
The two boys were at a party on Saturday with family friends on Pisgah Road when another child was given the key to the locked gate around the pool and discovered their bodies at the bottom.
Caleb was declared dead shortly after arriving at Greenville Memorial Hospital on Saturday afternoon, according to officials. Ezekiel was on life support until Sunday afternoon.
Reached on Father's Day, their father, Brandon, said he urges everyone to hug their loved ones extra hard.
"Hold them tight," he said. "You protect your kids as best as you can, they reach an age where they can run around and play. How do you defend against everything?"
The gate to the pool was locked and Anderson County Deputy Coroner Don McCown said the boys likely sneaked in through a gap that was opened in the fencing.
The boys deaths have been ruled accidental and there will be no autopsy, McCown said.
McCown, who leads investigations into child deaths, said it was a terrible accident and one in a line of several recent tragedies nationwide with children dying.
"It's just sad," he said.
Marcengill said he and his wife are leaning on friends, family and their church, the United Assembly of God near Seneca.
There are no funeral arrangements yet for the boys, Brandon said.
"We're just praying to the Lord," he said.
