North Carolina man killed in crash on Midlands road identified by coroner
A North Carolina man who was killed in a crash with a Mack truck on a major interstate running through the Midlands was publicly identified by the Fairfield County Coroner’s Office Wednesday.
Chavis G. Burton was a pedestrian who died Tuesday, Coroner Chris Hill said. The 70-year-old Huntersville, North Carolina, resident died at the scene, according to Hill. Huntersville is north of Charlotte.
The collision happened at about 5:30 a.m. on the southbound exit ramp of Interstate 77 near the 34 mile marker, said Master Trooper Gary Miller of South Carolina Highway Patrol. That’s the junction with S.C. 34, which is the connection to Ridgeway, Winnsboro, and Camden.
Burton was trying to cross I-77 when he was hit by the truck, according to Hill.
An autopsy is scheduled for Friday in Newberry.
The driver, who wore a seat belt, was the only person in the truck and was not hurt, Miller said.
No other injuries were reported in the crash that continues to be investigated by Highway Patrol and the coroner’s office.
Through Wednesday morning, 19 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2022, and two were pedestrians, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,097 people died in crashes in South Carolina, including 175 pedestrians, DPS data shows.
This is the first fatal collision in Fairfield County in 2022, after 10 people died in wrecks there last year, according to DPS.
