Since the only really important student athletes are male and football players, clearly our statue has to meet those specifications (“Missin’ Piece: A statue at Williams-Brice would add to the area’s makeover,” May 22). But a student athlete has to be a student first.
“Student” is more important than “athlete.” So our statue should depict the varsity male football player with the highest grade-point average in the past 20 years. And the plaque should explain what he did with his academic achievement — graduate school, dedicated himself to a career of service to humankind, etc., — which is to say what he did with his life as a decent human being after college. Let's put the emphasis where it really belongs.
