Nikki Haley doesn’t deserve to be re-elected. She may profess Christianity, but her values seem to be more corporate than Christian. Our governor has failed some of South Carolina’s most vulnerable citizens.
She has failed to adequately oversee the protection of abused and neglected children on her watch, and hasn’t yet made measurable progress on improving a social service system that has been inadequate for many years. She has failed the homeless mentally ill and other mentally ill citizens who can’t get preventive services from a mental health system that has been cut to the bone. She has ignored the plight of the uninsured poor who can’t get needed medical treatment, because she thinks Medicaid expansion is “wrong” for South Carolina and wants the Affordable Care Act to fail.
Our governor is big on conservative ideology, but short on Christian compassion — loving our less-fortunate neighbor as we love ourselves. We need a governor who truly cares about the neediest of our citizens, as well as the most prosperous.
