I do not find it necessary to condemn the violence inherent within white supremacy; simply opposing white supremacy is sufficient. However, I find it necessary to condemn the violence of the anti-fascist (antifa) movement, to say that the progressive left is not a vehicle for violence.
We do not need the antifa to defend us against the human tools of oppression, as we will take their beatings until their arms grow tired. When the antifa are kicking white supremacists in the face, do they think they are changing anyone’s mind?
We know Donald Trump sent a coded message to his white supremacist brethren when he referred to the violence on “many sides.” Those of us on the progressive left do indeed resist and oppose the fascists. However, we do not ask for a replacement of authoritarian fascism with the authoritarian socialism of the antifa.
In 2016, millions of Americans voiced their support for democratic socialism, and while the corrupt Democratic Party ensured a neoliberal loss to the fascist movement, we did not ask for violence as a response. Our coming victory through democratic means will have the legitimacy that violence can never achieve. People who wish to attend one of our protests should leave their masks and their thuggery at home. If they cannot, they should not come. They are not welcome. They do not represent us.
