The suggestion by U.S. Sens. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren that more government control of the economy will help grow America has made their “democratic socialism” the mother of all oxymorons.
There is no socialist country in the world that has come close to the economic success of America’s 240 year-old free-enterprise system.
To quote an old Mediterranean metaphor: “You may dress the shepherd in silk, but he will still smell of the goat.“ Dressing the term “socialism” with a politically pretty prefix still gives off the noxious odor of government control.
Sens. Sanders and Warren maintain that their progressive approach will greatly benefit the middle class. The 1 percent of the population whom they hate also happen to be the owners/investors of huge businesses in America and are responsible for millions of jobs for the middle class.

The nation’s economy is growing at 4.1 percent, easily surpassing the past four years of economic stagnation when the previous administration told the American people that the economy could not grow faster than 2.5 percent. The current job growth due to tax cuts and deregulation by Congress and the Trump administration is compelling proof that a free-enterprise system is far superior to any socialist government.
The State publishes a cross section of the letters we receive from South Carolinians in order to provide a forum for our community and also to allow our community to get a good look at itself, for good or bad. The letters represent the views of the letter writers, not necessarily of The State.
