S.C.'s youth all-stars take stage

ZACKARY WOODS OF Elgin finished fourth and Chris Bowling of West Columbia was the alternate in the boys division of the Timothy Spencer Rice scholarship tournament at Liberty Lanes in Gastonia, N.C.

South Carolina Interstate Youth All Stars. Several Columbia bowlers are members of the South Carolina Interstate Youth All Stars.

The Interstate Youth All Stars is a competition with All Stars teams from South Carolina, North Carolina and Georgia. There are three events each season with each state hosting a competition. Sandpiper Lanes in Charleston will host an event Oct. 10-11.

Ages 12-15 girls: Kristin Shinn; Justice April, Jasmine April, Payton Foy and Bailey Newman. Ages 16-19 girls: Ashley Trunk and Laura Matney.

Ages 12-15 boys: Chance Greer. Ages 16-19 boys: Adam Skidmore, Chris Bowling and Zack Woods.

Awards are also given to the high game and high series in each division and gender. "Bowler of the Year" receives a $200 scholarship in each division and gender.

ABA Tournaments. The ABA visited Wade Hampton Lanes in Taylors on Sept. 12.

In the handicap division, Bruce Miller of Anderson took the title over Carl Roberts of Columbia. Roberts earned $600. Sherry Hickman, West Columbia, and Victoria Dreher, Columbia ,took home $275 and $225.

ABA will host an event Oct. 12 at AMF Columbia Lanes. The event will be of the No-tap variety with a $1,200 first place prize.

Midlands SC USBC Association City Match Games. The city match games took place at Century Lanes on Sept. 12-13. The tournament was open to all sanctioned Midlands bowlers with 21 or more games.

David Clark made it through double-elimination match play to win the title over Charles Hucks. "Ax" Blackwell finished third with Byron Phillips coming in fourth. Jerry Horn finished fifth and Ken Foy was sixth. Archie Hall and Joey Shinn rounded out the top eight.

Scratch Sweeper. Anchor Lanes will host a scratch sweeper Monday at 9 p.m. The entry fee is $30. Competitors will bowl four games across eight lanes.
