S.C. State claims a national title

The S.C. State Bulldogs have captured the 2009 SBN Sports Black College National Football Championship. The Bulldogs posted a 10-2 record on the way to winning The SBN Jake Gaither National Championship Trophy for the first time since 1981.

"I'm especially happy for our seniors, who can look back on this season as a milestone in their careers," Coach Buddy Pough said.

Grambling State was the preseason favorite to repeat as SBN National Champions while S.C. State was chosen to finish in second place. The Bulldogs defeated the Tigers in the season opener, 34-31. South Carolina State maintained the number one position throughout the regular and post-season.

The Bulldogs will be honored during the 36th Annual SBN Sports Black College All-American Awards Weekend, Feb. 12-14, in Orlando.

Close Heisman vote draws record TV audience. The closest vote in Heisman Trophy history drew a record television audience for the announcement ceremony.

ESPN's telecast Saturday averaged a 4.1 rating, up 32 percent from the previous high of 3.1 set the last two years and in 2002.

Richmond, Winston-Salem hire coaches. The University of Richmond selected former Spiders assistant Latrell Scott, 34, as the new coach of its football program.

Connell Maynor has been hired to coach Winston-Salem State, taking over the program where he was an all-Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association quarterback.
