Running: Records melted at Snowman

The Snowman 8K on Jan. 16 featured two record-breaking performances and a winning design by a fifth-grader.

Franklin Mason, 85, of Mullins, set a state age-group record by finishing in 1 hour, 9 minutes, 47 seconds. Suzi Smith, 50, of Greenville, did likewise with her time of 32:21.

It was a big day for Regan Kelly, too. The Meadowfield Elementary School student had the winning design for the race T-shirt.

The Snowman, hosted by the Richland County Recreation Center in Hopkins, was won by N.C. runner Stuart Moran, 33, who finished in 24:47. Eric Ashton, 41, of Columbia, was second in 25:31.

Savannah's Michelle LaFleur, 37, was the first female finisher, seventh overall, in 29:49.

Greenville News Downtown 5K. The Jan. 23 race featured 1,812 participants and was won by Alabama runner Wallace Campbell, 23, in 15:01. Elgin's Orinthal Striggles, 34, the 2009 S.C. Long Distance Runner of the Year, was third in 16:09.

Charlie Post Classic. Sullivan's Island hosted 15K and 5K races on Jan. 30. Chris Bailey, 20, of Charleston, topped a field of 187 in the 15K, in 50:02. Heather Knight, 27, of Mount Pleasant, was the first female finisher, 27th overall, in 1:00:42. In the 5K, 153 competed, with Brian Johnson, 34, of Mount Pleasant, winning in 16:19. Charleston's Anne Clinton, 27, was the first female finisher, 12th overall, in 19:13.

Red Nose races. Columbia hosted the Red Nose 10K and 5K on Jan. 30. Lexington's Jason Dimery, 28, bested a 10K field of 91 with a time of 37:17. Sara Powell, 25, of Columbia, was the first female finisher, fourth overall, in 39:00. Irmo's Eric Allers, 39, won the 5K, which had 73 finishers, in 17:45. Nicole Rheinlander, 19, of Columbia, was the first female finisher, in 18:54.

Inaugural Foothill Drifters 6K Trail Run. The inaugural race, held Jan. 30, attracted 94 hardy souls who braved the ice, snow and mud they found at Lake Conestee Park. Eric Guth, 28, of Travelers Rest, won in 22:46. Megan Weis, 32, of Columbia, was the first female finisher, fifth overall, in 25:27. Caroline Jennings, 14, of Greenville, was eighth in 26:49.

Race for the Place 5K. Sponsored by St. Lawrence Place, Saturday's race benefited the homeless. Ashton won in 16:02, and his wife, Kathryn, 27, was the first female finisher, fourth overall, in 18:42 among 198 finishers.
