Clemson basketball coach Oliver Purnell said Friday he has not heard from Alabama about its coaching vacancy, but he has spoken with athletics director Terry Don Phillips about upgrading his current contract.
The Birmingham News reported in Friday’s editions that Purnell was on the school’s list of potential targets, citing a source familiar with the thinking in the Crimson Tide’s inner circle.
Purnell is in the first year of a six-year deal signed last March that bumped his total annual compensation to a little more than $1 million annually, believed to make him the fifth-highest paid coach in the ACC.
The 55-year-old was asked if he intends remain at Clemson for the long haul, as he intimated when the last contract extension was announced.

“I have no intention of going anywhere,” Purnell said. “I haven’t heard from anybody. It’s flattering when my name is mentioned in conjunction with other jobs.
“But at the same time, there’s no way I can be distracted by something like that. It’s nice, but we have our hands full in the ACC.”
