Football player Jake Nicolopulos will have an athletic scholarship awaiting him at Clemson when he is ready, the school said Monday. A student at T.L. Hanna High in Anderson, Nicolopulos sustained a stroke Dec. 9 at his home. He is hospitalized at AnMed Health and was listed in fair condition on Monday.
A linebacker, he had committed to Clemson in February.
Clemson received a waiver from the NCAA permitting members of the coaching staff to visit Nicolopulos during a highly sensitive recruiting period. Commitments are not binding. Prospects can sign National Letters of Intent beginning Feb. 3.
During a weekend visit by football coach Dabo Swinney and athletic director Terry Don Phillips, Nicolopulos' parents were told Clemson intends to honors its scholarship offer.
