Gadsden, Ala., offensive lineman Gavin Orr (6-foot-4, 270 pounds) has a connection to former Clemson Hall of Fame coach Danny Ford besides hailing from his hometown.
His grandmother is Ford's first cousin. So, it's only natural he'd attend one of Dabo Swinney's camp this week in an effort to earn an offer. Clemson offensive line coach Robbie Caldwell knew about Orr and invited him for a camp, and he worked out there earlier this week.
"He had seen my film and wanted to evaluate me in person," Orr said. "In high school I play tight end and H-Back but will most likely play interior offensive line in college. My high school rarely passes and when we do I'm on routes, so I guess he wanted to see me in the offensive line/defensive line pass blocking battles. Coach Caldwell told me to be patient, that they were going to be evaluating players for the next month or so and I could hopefully get an offer. He likes my footwork and toughness. I weigh 270 pounds right now but he thinks I could add 20 pounds of good weight and maintain my athleticism. He said they have already offered a couple of offensive linemen but will be offering a few more and I have a good chance to be one of them."
Orr also has made stops at Alabama and Mississippi State among other places including Furman and has been invited to camp at Vanderbilt, Purdue, Wake Forest, Duke, Kansas and Southern Miss. He has 19 offers with Appalachian State, Troy, Army, UAB, Middle Tennessee State and Samford among his favorites.
"If a Clemson offer comes, you can bet me and my family would be excited," Orr said. "A Clemson offer would definitely top the list."
Orr also is a basketball player, carries a 4.0 GPA and is the third ranked student in his class.
