You can add Panthers head coach Ron Rivera’s name to the list of people who believe former Clemson star Deshaun Watson should have won the Heisman trophy.
Rivera praised Watson’s play after Monday’s practice, ahead of Carolina’s preseason opener against the Texans on Wednesday.
“It’s going to be fun to see what Deshaun Watson does. I’m a big fan of his, obviously a fan of Clemson and what they’ve done the last two years,” Rivera said. “If I had a chance and a Heisman vote, I’d have given it to him.”
Tom Savage is listed as the Texans’ starting quarterback entering Wednesday’s game with Watson listed as the No. 2.
Houston is expected to give Watson plenty of opportunities to show what he can do during the preseason after the Texans drafted him in the first round.
“I think what he’s done in two years with that program was tremendous. I think he’s a good football player,” Rivera said. “It’s going to be fun to watch. We’re going to do everything we can to make it difficult on the young guy when he’s out there, but I think this is a good football team coming in.”
