South Carolina commit Jared Henry was responsible for the play that kept his high school team undefeated Friday night.
The First Coast (Fla.) safety laid a crunching hit on Sandalwood (Fla.) tailback Chris Spencer, forcing a fumble that led to the game’s winning touchdown in a 20-13 win. The Buccaneers improved to 4-0.
First Coast tied the game with a touchdown pass with 6:33 left, and on the second play of the ensuing possession, Henry rocked Sandalwood’s ball carrier. The football shot backwards 15 yards, where one of Henry’s teammates recovered. The winning score followed shortly thereafter.
“He broke outside and I just tried to break down and put a solid hit on him,” Henry told the Florida Times-Union. “Sometimes, I overrun plays trying to kill a guy. I made a good hit and when I looked up, the ball was out.”
Henry finished with seven tackles, including four solo stops, and one pass breakup.
“That play he made Friday night was a big-time college hit,” First Coast coach Marty Lee said. “He was running downhill when he hit him. That was a big play for us and definitely one of the hits of the week.
“He’s really having a great senior season and has stepped up to become a leader. He’s adjusted to the system we’re running. He’s definitely a big-time ball player for us.”
