Is Steve Spurrier serious? Is he really considering benching his best player, his best receiver and another starting receiver?
Difficult to believe, but that’s what the man said on Monday.
He seemed to be rankled that Bruce Ellington, Damiere Byrd and Jadeveon Clowney weren’t practicing as they sat with injuries, the first two with hamstrings and Clowney with a bruised shoulder. He pointed out that South Carolina had several other players who were practicing on Monday night, and that the Gamecocks weren’t dependent on three players.
Whether it’s a motivational ploy or not – and Spurrier seemed to hint that it was – Spurrier has always been a guy that does what he says he’s going to do. I’m sure that all three could and would play if the game was tomorrow, but Spurrier apparently wants to send the message that practice, not previous accomplishments or otherworldly talent, equals playing time.
Personally, no way I bet against those three playing on Aug. 29 unless they’re severely injured. But I’m not coaching the team.
