The dreaded “E” word popped up again this week, when Josh Kendall and I were filming a series of season preview videos.
“Will South Carolina meet its expectations this season?”
Always a tough question to answer, because expectations are often general, or unreachable. USC usually sets its goals to the tune of, “Win nine games,” “Win 10 games,” “Win a bowl game,” etc.
But the expectation for this team is to win the SEC East and then win the SEC, the one remaining goal that the Gamecocks have yet to accomplish under Steve Spurrier. Personally, I think they’ll hit the first and miss the second, but then again, this team has surprised many by continuing to hit expectations over the past two years.
Despite not playing for an SEC championship, USC finally broke the 10-win glass ceiling that the 1984 team set, and then matched the 11-win 2011 season with another 11 wins last year. With the knowledge that it can be done, and done again, many have ratcheted the expectations this year, since the schedule seems easier and the light shines brighter.
The program has also done it each year when it seemed as if the curtain was drawn. Somehow, the Gamecocks still did it without Marcus Lattimore.
Can that continue?
The first of GoGamecocks' season preview videos will debut on the site Monday.
