South Carolina’s season opener in baseball will have to wait a day.
Friday’s scheduled game against Bucknell has been postponed due to the snow and ice moving up the East Coast and rescheduled as part of a doubleheader Saturday starting at noon at Carolina Stadium. The second game is tentatively scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. Both games will be nine innings.
USC coach Chad Holbrook said the postponement will give the athletics department more time to get the ballpark ready for the opener, but the primary reason for change involves Bucknell’s travel plans.
Originally, the Bison were going to fly into Charlotte and take a bus to Columbia, but with so many flights being cancelled, the school didn’t want to take a chance on not being able to get here for the series. The team will travel by bus from Lewisburg, Pa., instead, which will take added time.
“We tried to accommodate Bucknell getting here safely,” Holbrook said. “They’re trying their best to get here so they’re going to bus down. That just puts them a little behind getting into town. We appreciate what Bucknell is doing to get down here and play.”
According to USC officials, the stadium will be cleared at the conclusion of the first game. Tickets for Friday’s opener will be honored for only the first game of the doubleheader. Tickets for the Saturday’s originally-scheduled game will be honored for only the second game of the doubleheader.
Holbrook still plans on using junior left-hander Jordan Montgomery for the first game and sophomore left-hander Jack Wynkoop for the second game.
Freshman right-hander Wil Crowe will pitch the finale at 12:30 p.m. Sunday.
