The Gamecocks' Carolina Stadium is the best college baseball venue in the country, according to an annual list compiled by StadiumJourney.com.
Carolina Stadium is No. 9 on the list of 100 stadiums across professional and collegiate sports, and five spots ahead of TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, home of the College World Series. Oriole Park at Camden Yards, where the Baltimore Orioles play, ranks No. 1 overall.
StadiumJourney said of Carolina Stadium: "Some places just do college baseball better. Before you walk through the gates and are greeted by two national championship trophies, you'll be greeted by tailgaters, boiled peanuts, cold beer and general excitement. Baseball season at Carolina Stadium in Columbia, SC is second only to football season. And even that is debatable, depending on who you ask. ... Perhaps part of the draw for recruits to Columbia is the 8,242-seat capacity gem of a college baseball venue, our pick for the best in college baseball."
The facility opened Feb. 21, 2009. The 2015 season will be the seventh there for USC.
The football team's Williams-Brice Stadium is No. 71 on the list.
"Saturday in Columbia is sacred," StadiumJourney wrote. "You'll have a hard time finding a conversation to engage in that doesn't steer towards Gamecock football or a traffic jam that doesn't lead to Williams-Brice Stadium."
This is the fourth season that StadiumJourney.com has offered the list. The ranking ratings "take into account the food & beverage served in the stadium, the overall atmosphere, the neighborhood where the stadium is located, the fans, access (which includes traffic, parking, ability to move around, and restrooms), the overall return on investment, and one final “extras” category," the website says.
