Former South Carolina defensive coordinator Lorenzo Ward had a chance to work with some of the best pass rushers the Gamecocks have ever had.
This week he compared his current duo at Louisville to one of the better pairs he had in Columbia.
Ward told 247’s InsideTheVille his pairing of James Hearns and Trevon Young were better at pass rushing than future No. 1 overall pick Jadeveon Clowney and Devin Taylor.
“I don’t think either one of them (Hearns and Young) is as good as Jadeveon Clowney but I think they have speed and quickness that they we didn’t have (at South Carolina),” Ward said. “Devin Taylor can’t rush the pass rusher like James Hearns and Trevon Young can.

“Clowney was the pass rush guy. Everything we did was set up to flush to Clowney. We don’t have to do that with these two young men. They both have the capability to sack the quarterback.”
Hearns had eight sacks last season, while Young had 8 1/2 in 2015 before missing 2016 with injury.
Taylor and Clowney combined for 16 sacks in 2012, 13 from Clowney. In 2011, they had 14 with six from Taylor.
