What's at stake
South Carolina's hoping to avoid becoming the latest BCS school upset by an FCS team, as happened to Ole Miss and Virginia Tech. Furman made beating the bigger schools routine during the mid-80s - it went 4-1-1 against current ACC and SEC schools between 1982 and 1986 - but has lost 19 of its past 20 games against FBS opponents.
South Carolina tailback Marcus Lattimore versus Furman's defensive line. Lattimore showed he may be one of the SEC's rising stars when he rushed for 182 yards and two touchdowns to beat Georgia last week. Furman has been among the stoutest defenses against the run in the Southern Conference, but entered this season with no returning starters along its front line.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Furman: QB Chris Forcier. The UCLA transfer and brother of Michigan's Tate Forcier rushed seven times for 130 yards, including an 85-yard TD run, in last week's victory over Colgate.
South Carolina: WR Alshon Jeffery. With all the hoopla about Lattimore's big SEC debut, Jeffery's stellar season has gotten overshadowed. He has 14 receptions for 209 yards this year, surpassing 100 yards receiving in both games.
