After South Carolina beat Florida on Saturday to clinch the SEC East title, Gamecocks head coach Steve Spurrier could hardly take a step toward the locker room without someone stopping him for a hug or a handshake.
Plenty of those came from former Gators who knew Spurrier from his 12 years as Florida’s head coach. In fact, several former Florida players – including Errict Rhett and Travis McGriff – were on the South Carolina sideline as time expired on the Gamecocks’ 36-14 win. Former Gator great Danny Wuerrfel, one of Spurrier’s favorite Gators, also was at the game.
“I am always glad to see those guys,” Spurrier said Wednesday on the SEC coaches’ teleconference. “It was neat to hug them after the game. You’ll have to ask those guys who they were pulling for, but a bunch of them had big smiles on their face when the game was over.”
The No. 17 Gamecocks take on Troy at 12:21 p.m. Saturday in Williams-Brice Stadium.
