The Gamecocks held another scrimmage Wednesday evening and the offense bounced back from its dreadful outing in the last one.
Senior quarterback Stephen Garcia was 9-for-13 for 136 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Sophomore Connor Shaw finished 8-for-9 for 100 yards and a touchdown.
“The defense took a lot of the d-linemen out, so it was a little easier to throw today,” head coach Steve Spurrier said. “It was OK. The receivers caught everything. Nobody got hurt, so that was good.”
Garcia found Damiere Byrd for a 38-yard scoring pass, and Shaw hit Lamar Scruggs for a 37-yard score. It was Byrd's third scrimmage touchdown of the preseason.
Freshman running back Shon Carson had a 3-yard touchdown run. The only turnover of the day came when cornerback Victor Hampton intercepted Garcia.
“Connor’s done pretty well,” Spurrier said. “He’s throwing it around, zipping it around. Stephen did a lot better today, although he had a couple errant mental errors that hopefully he can learn from.”
Junior D.L. Moore had a 63-yard catch.
