When Florida athletics director Jeremy Foley gave Gators coach Will Muschamp a hearty vote of confidence on Wednesday evening, South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier probably smiled.
Spurrier, a former Heisman Trophy winner and national championship coach at Florida, expressed his fondness for Muschamp earlier in the day Wednesday.
“We have a good relationship,” Spurrier said. “I admire the way he coaches his team, runs the show down there. Obviously, this year they have had a rash of injuries all over the team that have really hurt them, but they’ve still got plenty of ball players, and they are still a very hard-nosed physical-type team.”
Florida is 4-5 in Muschamp’s third season at the helm. The former Georgia player shares an affinity for Spurrier, who he reached out to after being hired in Gainesville, Fla.
“I think more than anything I just admire the job he has done as a head coach,” Muschamp said. “He’s done it the right way, too. He does things first class. He handles things the right way, and I really have a lot of respect for the man.”
