Rising senior Akeem Auguste is headed back to cornerback, and he will practice there during the spring, Ellis Johnson said.
Auguste started nine games at cornerback as a sophomore but was moved to safety last season. He never found much consistency at that position, moving in and out of the starting lineup.
Holloman might get a shot at cornerback as well, Johnson said. DeVonte Holloman played the position in high school.
“He’s got very natural hands and uses them well,” Johnson said. “I don’t know the last time I coached a 230-pound corner, but if he can cover, we’ll let him cover.”
Holloman’s natural position is spur or weakside linebacker, Johnson said, but the Gamecocks don’t have enough depth in the secondary to move him.
In other player news, rising junior linebacker Qua Gilchrist will not participate in spring practice after having “pretty serious” shoulder surgery earlier this year, Johnson said.
