Here’s a little background on covering the South Carolina football beat:
Head coach Steve Spurrier usually talks to the media following either the Tuesday or Thursday spring practice. Essentially, when Spurrier feels like talking, he ambles over and says his peace and takes a few questions. There is no media availability following the team’s Friday practices.
So, when a one-line email appeared in my inbox (and several others) Friday saying that Spurrier would be available following practice, I knew something was up. I would never have guessed that something would be Spurrier having himself handcuffed by Columbia’s chief of police in order to prove a point.
It was surreal and a little silly (OK, a lot silly), but it accomplished Spurrier’s goal, which was to get everyone talking about him and not about the fact that Jadeveon Clowney was detained in Five Points well after midnight after being in a bar he was not allowed to be in.
The biggest headline (non-basketball division) will now have Spurrier’s name in it and not Clowney’s.
