Remember when it looked like we were headed for a dud of a Carolina-Clemson game?
It was only two week ago after all. South Carolina was coming apart at the seams, having lost four SEC games in a row (and looking like it was well on its way to a fifth against Florida in The Swamp). Clemson was feeling great about ending its five-game losing streak and starting a new era in the rivalry behind freshman quarterback sensation Deshaun Watson.
Now, with game week at hand, it’s a much different story, as Gamecocks head coach Steve Spurrier pointed out himself.
Several Las Vegas sports books are hesitant to put out a point spread on the game because of the uncertainty surrounding Watson’s sprained knee and whether he’ll play. South Carolina has won two in a row and has a defense that is playing with confidence for the first time this season.
Suddenly, we’ve got a ball game.
The one Las Vegas casino that posted the line on the game Sunday evening started the Tigers as a 4-point favorite but that dropped to 3.5 in the first 30 minutes the line was open. That’s a dramatic difference from the 9.5-point spread (in Clemson’s favor) two weeks ago.
Regardless of what side of the rivalry you’re on, this way is more fun, don’t you think?
Around the SEC:
Florida’s players rallied around fired Will Muschamp this week at practice.
Duke Williams’ return to Auburn’s lineup should make the Iron Bowl more interesting. Let’s hope so at least.
It’s Egg Bowl week, too, as Mississippi State looks to stay in the College Football Playoff picture and Ole Miss looks to stop its late-season slide.
The story dominating social media this morning has an SEC connection, so here’s a look at former LSU wide receiver Odell Beckham making a ridiculous catch for the New York Giants last night.
