For the first time in more than 20 years, South Carolina and Coastal Carolina will play in men’s basketball.

USC and Coastal Carolina agreed on a three-game series beginning this season, CCU announced Wednesday. It will be the first time the teams will meet since 1993.

USC will host the first two years of the series against the Chanticleers. This year’s game will be held Dec. 9 at Colonial Life Arena. No date has been set for the 2018 game.

The Gamecocks will travel to CCU in 2019. It will be the first time USC will play in Conway.

The game in Conway will be a homecoming for USC center Jason Cudd, who played high school basketball at Socastee.

The two programs have met twice before. Both games were played in Columbia with the first game in January 1989, with the Gamecocks winning 92-65. CCU won, 88-74, in December 1993.

Coastal is coached by former Clemson and Auburn coach Cliff Ellis. The longtime coach is 18-10 against South Carolina. Jaylen Shaw, who started his career at USC, is a guard for the Chanticleers.

The addition of Coastal on USC’s nonconference schedule gives the Gamecocks 13 non-SEC games.

USC will open against Wofford and play three games in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off tournament. Western Michigan, Temple, Massachusetts, Clemson, Florida International, Wyoming and Texas Tech also will be on the schedule.

The game against Temple will be at Madison Square Garden, and Texas Tech will be part of Big 12/SEC Challenge.
