DE Ben Councell (6-5 230) of Asheville, NC committed to Notre Dame last June but the strength of that pledge is now being tested by USC. Councell made an unofficial visit to USC for the Tennessee game. His coach, Shane Laws, talked with him Tuesday to get a read on his thinking.
"He's still committed to Notre Dame but wants to make sure and cover all his bases," Laws said. "South Carolina is the other school he likes a lot. He's trying to make a decision on if he's still committed to Notre Dame. Is South Bend too far away? How much of a change (from the South) would it be going to South Bend? He's just trying to make sure he's signing with the right place. He's trying to decide if he's going to stay committed or has South Carolina become a serious option. He enjoyed his visit (to USC). He saw how easy it was to get home and for his folks to come see him play."
USC is the only other school Councell is considering besides Notre Dame. Some of his other offers were Auburn, Georgia Tech, Maryland, North Carolina, NC State and West Virginia.
Councell has about 100 tackles this season and leads his team in tackles and tackles for loss. He can play outside linebacker in a 3-4 and plays defensive end in a 4-3. "He's an incredible athlete," Laws said. "There's not a whole lot he can't do."
