OL Martin Zandi (6-9 275) of Chapin made waves at Clemson and USC camps earlier this month. The Tigers did not offer but talked to him about coming in as a grayshirt. USC has gone a step farther. Wednesday Zandi was offered by Gamecock offensive line coach Shawn Elliott.
Zandi did not make a commitment. "He's going to call Coach Elliott back tonight," said Chapin coach Justin Gentry. "As far as I know, it's just to talk to him some more." And Zandi confirmed that is his plan, just to get more information from Elliott. "We're going to wait it out a little bit longer," Zandi said of his commitment plans. "I've got three schools I'm looking at in USC, Clemson and East Carolina. I want to get to know the coaching staffs at the schools." He said there is no timetable for a decision.
Zandi is a newcomer to the offensive line. He spent the past two seasons as a defensive end. He will play left tackle for Gentry this season. "He's an athlete," the coach said. "He has a frame that can carry another 40-50 pounds. He has great hands and long arms. And he will grow more." Zandi won't turn 17 until September. His coach said he might use him some at tight end as well this season.
