Several years ago then USC secondary coach Ron Cooper reached into Mobile, AL and plucked cornerback Captain Munnerlyn who went on to become one of the best Gamecock defenders in recent history. The Gamecocks are going back into Mobile in search of corner help in the form of Jalen Thompson (6-0 170).
Thompson will visit USC Thursday and Friday with two friends and future prospects from Mobile, 2016 QB Tyrone Johnson and his brother 2017 LB Thomas Johnson.
"I have a lot of interest in South Carolina," Thompson said. "It's one of the schools I want to get to know about. The SEC is a bid deal because I'd love to play in the SEC. I don't know that much about them. I've been doing research and I've watched them the last couple of years and I like what I've seen."
Thompson has over 35 offers and said his focus right now is on USC, Kentucky, Georgia and Miami. The Gamecocks have made it clear to him that he is wanted.
"They've been pushing hard since the end of May," he said. "It's close among all the schools and I don't have a leader." Thompson wants to make a decision around the end of July.
Last season he had 39 tackles, 7 interceptions, 3 sacks, 2 forced fumbles and he returned 4 punts for touchdowns.
