Fairfield Central heads back to state title game

Coach Demetrius Davis has guided Fairfield Central to the Class 2A Division I title game for the second time in as many seasons.

In his second year with the Griffins, Davis’ team earned the title-game berth Friday with a 37-13 win against Cheraw.

Fairfield Central will play Dillon in a rematch of the 2012 title game on Friday at 8:30 p.m. at Charlie W. Johnson Stadium.

The Griffins (14-0) never trailed, holding a three-possession lead after a first-half shutout.

Fairfield Central scored twice in the first three minutes of play and led 21-0 at the half after DeAndre Belton’s 10-yard scoring pass to Tyren White with six minutes to go in the second quarter.

Cheraw made its first trip to the endzone midway through the third period, but the Griffins responded with a five-minute drive that ended with another Belton-White scoring connection, this time from 20 yards out.

And at the start of the final period, Belton struck again, hitting Javaris Cook on a 40-yard catch-and-run.

Cheraw would score with less than a minute to go but it was not enough for the Braves (9-5).

At Goose Creek, Stratford defeated South Pointe to advance to the Class 4A Division II state title game next Saturday at Williams-Brice Stadium. It will be Stratford’s first championship-game berth since 2004.

The Knights (12-2) will play the state’s top-ranked Northwestern Trojans (14-0) at noon.

On Friday night, senior quarterback Jacob Park threw for 268 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for one score to lead the Knights. Park, who threw an interception on the third play of the game that was returned for a touchdown, completed passes to several different receivers as the Knights rarely tried to run the football.

Stratford’s defense was the story of the game. The Knights limited the Stallions (11-3), which upset Goose Creek in the second round last week, to less than 150 yards.
