Defending Class 4A state champion Irmo will return to the top spot in the big-school rankings when the next SCBCA polls are released.
The Yellow Jackets humbled top-ranked Gaffney 85-68 in the Dorman Classic II championship game on Monday, dooming the Indians with an 18-3 run at the end of the third quarter that turned a close game into a rout.
Pressure made it work for Irmo. The key surged was fueled by five Gaffney turnovers.
Georgetown-bound L.J. Peak put on a show for Gaffney with 32 points and 12 rounds, but the Yellow Jackets countered with Xaview Hill and Jevante Gross. Hill was credited with 28 points, include a 5-for-7 shooting performance from 3-point range. Goss rang up 14 points and 12 rebounds.

Irmo started the season ranked No. 1, but dropped to fifth in the first regular season poll after suffering a preseason tournament loss to Dorman. Gaffney, which started the season No. 5, took the Jackets’ place at the top of the heap.
Expect another readjustment when the new numbers are released in a week or two.
Irmo, 10-1 and riding an eight-game winning streak, will take a weekend trip to the Lowcountry later this week. The Jackets face James Island on Friday, West Ashley on Saturday.
