The Cardinal Newman softball team made up for a run of recent playoff disappointments by storming back through the loser’s bracket to win the 2008 SCISA Class 3A championship, the second under coach Doug Frye.
The Cardinals finished with a 19-13 overall record.
Four seniors went out in style – Sam August, Lauren McCarter, Meredith Sexton and Sara Shull. August hit .325 with 24 runs, 18 RBIs and 12 steals. McCarter batted .366 with 23 runs, 18 RBIs, 4 3Bs and 11 steals. Sexton hit only .238, but scored 17 runs and drove in 17 on just 15 hits. Shull, the ace of the pitching staff, was plagued an injury that limited her to just 9.1 innings in the circle this season, but she hit .300 with 12 runs and 11 RBIs down the stretch.
Sophomore Nazley Wilson stepped up to fill the pitching void, going 16-9 with one save and a 1.40 ERA.
