Spring Valley’s boys cross country team has been among the top Class 4A programs in state for the past 25 years under coach John Jones, but the veteran Vikings coach has his doubts about his 2008 team’s ability to keep pace with tradition.
“But basically only have one returning starter and we’ve had very spotty participation during summer workouts because of various factors,” said Jones. “We have had no continuity in our training over the summer, and that’s not a good way to get ready for the season. I honestly don’t have any idea right now what kind of season we are going to have.”
The Vikings almost slipped out of the Top 10 at state a year ago, finishing in 10th in the 4A finals. Junior Jonathan Hanson is the only runner back that started all season. Hanson placed 63th at state as Spring Valley’s No. 3 runner. Freshmen William Ivey and Jaron Pettis also ran at the state meet, filling injury holes in the lineup. Ivey did quite well, finishing 47th as the Vikings second-best runner at the season finale.
Other than those three, Spring Valley has little in the way of big-race experience.
