Chapin at Strom Thurmond
Game notes: The Eagles are hoping to build upon a strong finish in 2007 with a veteran defense in tow and the returning of quarterback Josh Miller. Chapin stumbled out to a 1-3 start last season, but won three of its last four regular season games to make the Class 3A playoff cut. Larry Grady’s team then scored a first-round upset win vs. Hilton Head before being eliminated in the second round to finish at 6-6 … Chapin takes on former Region 4-3A rival Strom Thurmond in the season opener. Neither school has ever had a Week 0 season debut, and the early game means the Rebels will not launch their new campaign against North Augusta for the first time since 1987 … Thurmond, which drops down to the Class 2A for the first time this season, is 40-12 in four seasons under coach Lee Sawyer.
Series history: The Rebels have dominated the series, winning all four previous meetings by a combined 141-20 count. Strom Thurmond rolled to a 35-14 win last season. The teams never met until Chapin graduated to the 3A level in 2004.
